Insects able to predict earthquakes

We have seen the same phenomenon in the case of large animals, such as dogs and elephants.

Red wood ants, who prefer to build their nests along geological faults, change their behavior significantly right before an earthquake and do not return to their usual routine until a day after the quake.

A recent German study found that the ants stay awake and remain outside their nest during the night before an earthquake as small as magnitude 2, even risking being caught by predators.  Scientists speculate that ants may be picking up changing gas emissions or shifts in the earth magnetic field.  They have receptors for carbon dioxide gradients and receptors for electromagnetic fields.
