Wealthy Venice to hold a referendum on breaking away from Rome after years of 'propping up Italy's crime-ridden south'

The proposed ‘Repubblica Veneta’ would include the five million inhabitants of the Veneto region and could later expand to include parts of Lombardy, Trentino and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The ballot comes the same day that Crimeans are expected to vote for independence from Ukraine in a landslide ballot. Recent polls have shown that two-thirds of Venetians are in favour of independence. Freedom from Rome would remove the heavy tax burden of propping up Italy’s poor and crime-ridden south.
