Unlike the prehistoric monument, Manhattan gets two dates with the sun each year because its grid system does not line up precisely with the compass points
The majestic sight occurs twice a year over a two day period - when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's grid system, beaming light down the city streets.   See the sunset that illuminated New York's busy streets in shades of gold and orange.

For the second time this year, Manhattanhenge set New York's iconic skyline alight, as crowds gathered to take photos of the spectacular solar phenomenon.

Monday's sunset more than made up for May's grey skies and delighted New Yorkers took to social media to share their snaps

Tyson described the sight as a 'radiant glow of light across Manhattan's brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough's grid. A rare and beautiful sight.'

The phenomenon was named Manhattanhenge in 2002 in reference to Stonehenge (pictured) in England
